As autumn settles over New Zealand and the mornings turn crisp, our thoughts naturally turn toward April 25th—ANZAC Day. It is a day that holds a sacred place in the hearts of Kiwis, a time to stand in the dawn light and remember the service and sacrifice of those who fought for our freedoms.
This year, I wanted to create something special and lasting to help you carry that spirit of remembrance with you. I am so proud to introduce my latest handcrafted collection:
The Vibrant Felt ANZAC Poppy.
The Significance of the Poppy in New Zealand
In New Zealand, the red poppy is more than just a flower; it is one of our most powerful symbols of heritage. Its origins lie in the mud and desolation of the World War I battlefields in Flanders, where the resilient red blooms were the first plants to grow amidst the graves of fallen soldiers.
Today, wearing a poppy is a way to say "Lest We Forget." It connects us to the soldiers of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZACs) who landed at Gallipoli in 1915, and to all servicemen and women who have served our country since.
Handcrafted with Heart and Wool
I believe that such an important symbol deserves to be made with care and intention. Each of my poppies is meticulously handcrafted using traditional techniques:
The Petals: I use a vibrant, deep red wool felt that captures the striking beauty of a living poppy. Unlike paper versions, the felt provides a soft, tactile, and durable finish.
The Centers: Each poppy features a "black heart" that has been individually needle-felted. This process involves using a special barbed needle to sculpt the wool into a dense, textured center, giving every flower its own unique character.
The Stems: Finished with soft green accents, these poppies are designed to look beautiful from every angle.
Wear it or Display it
Whether you are attending a Dawn Service or simply want to show your respect throughout the month of April, I have created two ways for you to display these blooms:
1. The Poppy Brooch: Featuring a secure pin, these are perfect for pinning to your lapel, coat, or scarf. Because they are made of high-quality felt, they can be worn year after year.
2. The Poppy on a Stick: These are ideal for placing in a small vase at home, adding to a memorial wreath, or placing at a local cenotaph.
